"Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires" Argentina Things to Do Tip by iwys
Argentina Things to Do: 447 reviews and 726 photos
Teatro Colón is the leading opera house in South America and I'd have loved to see a performance, but it was closed for renovation when I was here and will not reopen until 2010. The current building ws built between 1904 and 1908. It was designed by architects, Francesco Tamburini, Vittorio Meano and Jules Dormal, and has seating for 2,478, with room for 500 more standing.
Some of the greatest names in the world of classical music, opera and ballet have performed here, including Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Camille Saint-Saëns, Manuel de Falla, Aaron Copland, Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Enrico Caruso, Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé, Alfredo Kraus, José Carreras, Kiri Te Kanawa, Plácido Domingo, Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev.
