Favorite thing: See THE TIBER and CASTEL SANT'ANGELO at dusk... Originally built as the mausoleum of the Emperor Hadrian, Castel Sant'Angelo allegedly came to be the 'fortress of the popes' after Pope Gregory the Great saw a vision in 590. St. Michael is said to have appeared to the pope over the mausoleum to foretell the end of the plague that was then ongoing in Rome... and to suggest that the mausoleum be transformed into a fortress. Thus, Castel Sant'Angelo became the papal refuge during times of civil unrest.
