In the bar at Michael Caines

Michael Caines is located in the basement of the recently refurbished hotel that is now called Abode. It is not named after the film star but the chef who is the head of this group of restaurants, who, like many of these places nowadays doesn't actually cook here but just helped to devise the menu.
We started with a drink in the bar which is decorated with very cool pictures of rock stars - Debbie Harry, David Bowie etc. You feel as though you are entering quite a funky venue. This doesn't last long as the music playing is anything but cool - bland typical middle aged restaurant music.
We found the food good quality but very overpriced with starters around 15 and mains around 20 each on the A la carte menu. The menu is quite French inspired and unfortunately "foam" crops up in quite a few dishes. I'm always suspicious of menus that use foam a lot - really can't stand the texture and find it totally pointless. Maybe it's hard to make and it's a way of showing you the chef can cook. Well, you would expect he could at 90 a head!
There is a taster menu which allows you to sample around 8 small courses for 55 per head, and a grazing menu from which you have to order a minimum of 2 dishes.
Basically they will extract the 's from you whatever you choose, particularly after you've had some drinks and added the 11% service charge to the bill!
Other criticisms include the total lack of vegetables. With my duck I got 1 piece of turnip and a piece of leek with no option to order vegetables as a side dish. Presumably you are expected to have had all your 5 a day before you eat dinner here.
Service is very good, but efficient and professional rather than warm and friendly. Although thesommelier was excellent in recommending wines for our taste and budget.
I wouldn't return here in a hurry, unless on expenses, because there are many better value restaurants in Manchester serving equally good food - and with vegetables!
