The nearest railway station to Machu Picchu is at Aguas Calientes. From there it is a 20-minute bus ride up to Machu Picchu. Perurail trains for Aguas Calientes leave Estacion San Pedro in Cuzco daily at 6.50am, arriving at 10.51am, and return from Aguas Calientes between 3.30 and 5pm. The fare in the backpacker trains is $48 one way and $73 return. The train stops at Ollantaytambo. In high season only there is a much cheaper alternative from Ollantaytambo, which costs just $7 return.

You will need to book well in advance, especially for the train back to Cuzco, as most people take the Inca Trail up and the train back.
