Calgary Off The Beaten Path: 72 reviews and 82 photos

Most travellers hit Banff and Jasper when visiting this province, but I would also like to recommmend visiting Waterton National Park 2.5 hours South of Calgary. If you are into hiking (at any level) and you tend to dislike the crowds of tourists at Banff, this Park may be perfect for you. Camping is available (although very busy on long weekends)and there are several hotels there as well. The park is quite windy so keep that in mind when packing - this is probably attributable to the fact that the park is literally where the prairie meets the mountains. Amazing scenery delighted me during my first visit to the park in 1999. I hear good fishing is available as well. Definitely visit the Tourist Info. centre for hiking info - they are very friendly and helpful. Lots of bears around too so heed the warnings!!
I have added a pic of a hike my friends and I did that went from AB into BC (7 km one way I think). The endpoint was this glacial lake pictured to the left.
