Milazzo is not one of the Sicily's prettiest towns due to its industrial development and unsightly oil refinery. Though the main reason to visit Milazzo is to get off the main island and head for the Aeolian archipelago, there is enough in and around town to make it an enjoyable overnight stop. Everything of interest is within walking distance.

A 15-minute walk north along Lungomare Garibaldi and up through the old town offers a pleasing change from the busy dock. Here you'll find several nice churches and old palaces but the only real attraction is the citadel. The enormous castello was built by Frederick II in the 13th century on the site of the Greek acropolis and enlarged by Charles V. Inside the castle walls is the Duomo Antico. Milazzo has a couple of other churches worth looking at, as Chiesa del Rosario and Duomo Nuovo.

We took a further drive along the Strada Panoramica to Capo Milazzo and spent two nights, before and after the Aeolian trip. The rugged coastline is beautifully unspoilt and there are plenty of good beaches around.

The shipping agencies for ferries and hydrofoils to the Aeolians, Siremar (www.siremar.it) and Ustica Lines (www.usticalines.it) are both by Milazzo's port. You can pick up useful ferry/hydrofoil timetables from any of them.
