The Geysir geothermal area is ca 3 sq.km and there are a lot more hot-springs in this area than Strokkur. There is Blesi hot-spring, Litli Geysir "Small Geysir", Konungshver "The King's hot spring" and more. The Geysir area is a high-temperature geothermal area with a base temperature of 250 degrees C, and the hot-springs are up to 100 degrees C hot, so one needs to be really careful when walking in this area and take extra good care of holding on to one's children. Accidents have been known to happen.

There is a hiking trail up the mountain behind the area where you can get a better look of this magnificent area.

On the other side of the road there is Hotel Geysir and an information center with a restaurant, a volcanic show, souvenir shop and other activities.

The Geysir area has never been declared as protected. This is due to the fact that there are many landowners and the state only owns a small piece of this area, 2 hectares. The area belonging to the state includes Strokkur, Geysir and Blesi, but Konungshver hot spring is outside this area, so you can see how small the state-owned land is really. The state had planned to buy this whole area and to preserve it, but in the final stages of negotiation in 2008 the financial crisis hit us hard and the negotiations stopped.

Directions: Geysir is on the Golden Circle tour. Take ring-road 1 and turn on 35 just before you reach Selfoss. That route will take you to Geysir and Gullfoss. It is ca 115 km away from ReykjavÝk. There are other routes to be taken via Ůingvellir and Laugavatn.
