Hallormsstaðaskógur forest is 27 km away from Egilsstaðir, which is the largest town in East-Iceland. Hallormsstaðaskógur forest is considered to be Iceland's leading woodland. It has a arboretum nowhere to be found at such a northern latitude. I has got great hiking trails, one of which leads you to the beautiful waterfall Ljósárfoss or Selfoss in Ljósá river. At the information center on the camping site you can get a map of the main hiking trails and they are marked with colours and you just follow the coloured bars which makes the hike easier as you go through the forest. The hike to Ljósárfoss is about an hour back and forth (850 meters from the main-road) it is an easy one and well worth it.
Ljósárfoss is 16 m high and the rock surrounding it is more than 20 meters high. There is a 3 meters' high small waterfall a little bit below Ljósárfoss. On your way to the waterfall you walk through the forest and you can see trees planted in 1965-67 from Siberia and Alaska.
Address: Ljósárkinn, Hallormsstaðaskógur, Fljótsdalshérað
Directions: 27 kilometres from Egilsstaðir, 698 or 726 kilometres away from Reykjavík on ring-road 1, depending on which direction you are coming from. Take route 931 to get to the waterfall.
