"St÷varfj÷rur - Petra's mineral collection." East Iceland Things to Do Tip by Regina1965
East Iceland Things to Do: 28 reviews and 136 photos
Petra's mineral collection in St÷varfj÷rur East-Iceland is not to be missed. It is one of the best private collections of its kind in the world, an unbelievable collection which makes you say "wow" more than once i.e. if you are a stone-lover like I am. Around 20.000 tourists visit her museum every year.
Petra started collecting stones from an early age and the collection grew so much that visitors started asking for permission to have a look at her collection, which is in her own home and garden. I took so many pictures of the collection and the magical garden, it is like stepping into another world. Kudos to Petra for her work.
The admission fee is ISK 500 for adults over 14 and the opening hours are from 9-18 or upon agreement.
I have added more photos of this extraordinary museum in a travelogue.
It is well worth getting off ring-road 1 which takes you to Egilsstair from BreidalsvÝk. Part of the ring-road 1 to Egilsstair is gravel-road, where as most of the roads in the East-fjords are paved. If you take road 96 to St÷varfj÷rur you can then go to Fßskr˙sfj÷rur and take road 956 to Reyarfj÷rur through the tunnel and take road 92 to Egilsstair where we were headed.
Petra died in January 2012.
