Enna's main attraction is Castello di Lombardia, the biggest castle of Sicily. It was built by Frederick II in the early part of the 13th century. The castle is a mighty construction with its strong walls. Originally it had 20 towers, but only six have survived to the present day. Torre Pisana (the tallest tower) is worth climbing for fabulous views of Enna itself, the rugged countryside in all directions.

Within the walls is a complex structure of courtyards. The closest one to the entrance Cortile di San Martino (Courtyard of St Martin) hosts nightly plays and performances of a medieval nature. There is also a little museum Sicily in Celebration. It represents customs and celebrations of Sicily in photographs and texts. And Rosa Balistreri, the voice of Sicily, was in the background in the time of my visit.

The castle is open daily: 8am-8pm in summer and 9am-5pm in winter; admission is free.

Address: Piazza Mazzini
Directions: the easternmost part of the city
