Established in 1876, the museum opened in 1877. Construction of the current building began in 1919 when Mayor Thomas B. Smith laid the cornerstone in a Masonic ceremony on the former reservoir land of the decommissioned Fairmount Water Works covering ten acres of ground. The Phil. Art Museum describes itself as "one of the largest museums in the United States", and its collections include more than 227,000 objects.
We enjoyed the Strand Photography, Degas exhibit, the cafeteria and coffee shop offered healthy reasonable choices. The gift shops were very impressive.
Hours are 10 to 5 Tuesday to Sunday with late nights Wednesday and Fridays until 8:45. Adult admission is $20 but Wednesday's after 5:00 and the first Sunday of every month are pay what you wish. We have found groupon specials for the museum.
