It really should be Cameras con vista - every room at this small hotel has an uninterrupted view of Agrigento's eastern temples. The rooms themselves are large, light and airy, bathrooms are equally spacious - and spotless. Some have a balcony large enough to sit out on in comfort - perfect for whiling away the twilight hours as the the sun goes down, turning the temples the most amazing gold, before man-made lighting comes on to highlight them against the night sky. If you're lucky enough (as we were) to strike a full moon, the effect is pure magic.

After a friendly welcome, being shown to our rooms and a reviving cup of tea, we took off for the temples. Returning just before sundown, it was time for a chat with the delightful co-owner (and the hotel's architect/furniture designer) Nello, who pointed us in the direction of a good place for dinner and then left us to own devices. With only one other couple staying there that night - they arrived late, disappeared into the night and were gone when we got up - the whole place was ours to enjoy on our own!

We woke to the sound of birdsong and the smell of fresh coffee and came downstairs to find a feast of fruit, a pile of beautifully fresh rolls and pastries, fresh squeezed orange juice and that coffee, which tasted as good as it smelt. Breakfast over, we headed off for a morning spent at the temples and the museum before returning to pack our bags and head west.

We'd certainly come back to Casa con vista but next time, we'd stay longer.

Unique Qualities: Casa con vista is just a couple of minute's drive (and only a short walk) to the main entrance to the Valley of the Temples complex which is a few kilometres out of the city centre. It's well signposted and easy to find but it does stand pretty much on its own (there's a private clinic right next door but no other buildings or facilities in the immediate area). The view to the temples is uninterrupted but they are at a bit of a distance, not right on the hotel's doorstep. It's a lovely location, very quiet and peaceful, with views over the surrounding country.

As well as the rooms' private terraces, there's a large, shady ground floor terrace. There is a bar but no restaurant. Parking is within the securely locked grounds.

Fresh, contemporary decor, stylish furnishings and cool stone floors give the place a relaxed uncluttered feel that suits the sunshine and open spaces of Sicily beautifully.

When he's not being hotelier/architect/designer, Nello wears another hat as tour guide, though only in French and Italian.
