Introduce yourself to Pili, the regional tree, unique to the Bikol region and grew in isolated parts in the Visayas as well. It's an unassuming tree, not immediately observable to an untrained eye, but they abound the region.

What's ultimately different about this tree is its pili fruit or nut (Canarium ovatum). Green in color and symmetrical 4-7 cms fruit when young, it turns blue-black as it grew ripe. The nut-fruit's pulp is edible, boiled to softness and tastes close to sweet potato. Pili is generally known for the hard-encrusted nut which houses a delicious kernel, even superior to almond. The pili kernel is processed dry-roasted, slightly sweetened, or candied and can be bought widely in Bikol and other parts of the Philippines.
