"Lewis and Clark and York monument" University Park Off The Beaten Path Tip by glabah
University Park Off The Beaten Path: 7 reviews and 30 photos
This monument, on the campus of the University of Portland, is in a location that is thought to be close to the furthest south on the Willamette River reached by the Lewis & Clark expedition.
The monument also commemorates the fact that three races contributed to the success of the expedition.
When this monument was installed new, there was still some considerable economic hardship throughout north Portland.
Now, 20 years later, there has been considerable change, and we can hope some improvements, for those residents of north Portland who were left behind due to racism in the community.
The Lewis & Clark expedition, when they conducted voting, included all races, and female members of the party too. Thus the testament to the expedition being the first true integrated society in Oregon.
