A vist to the Heidelberg Castle is a must for every Heidelbetg visitor.

It takes some 300+ steps to reach the castle or go up with the Heidelberg Bergbahn from the Kornmarkt station. If you come by car park either at the underground parking at the Karl Platz (P13) or above the castle.

The castle location was chosen to control the Neckar vallay from above. The castle history starts in 1225 with count Ludwig I. In 1386 Ruprecht I founded the University. Later Ludwig V enforced the castle with the Artillery Garden and the Herb Tower. In 1524 Ludwig V added the Ludwigsbau and the Hall-of-Mirrors Building was erected under Friedrich II in 1549. Ottheinrich started the transition of the castle into a Renaissance building by commissioning the Ottheinrich Palace. Friedrich IV added the Friedrichsbau Palace. Friedrich V demanded that the Castle Garden be turned into the eighth wonder of the world, but during the 30 year war Heidelberg was ransacked and destroyed several times.
The peace time lasted not long. French Sun King Ludwig XIV took posession and in 1689 the town was destructed again. From 1697 the city was rebuild slowly. In 1720 all plans to rebuild the castle were stopped. However, Karl Theodor restarted the rebuilding of the castle and added the Great Barrel, the Karlstor and the Old bridge. In 1764 the castle was hit by lightning and half of the buildings burned down. In the early 19th century Count Graimberg started a renewed rebuilding program.
