A castle has been on this site since around 1250, the 1st incarnation was a Gothic Castle. During the Middle Ages, it served as both an aristocratic property and a site of royal administration. In 1562 King Ferdinand I sold Hluboka to the Lords of Hradec who turned the castle into a Renaissance stately home.
The design of the castle/chateau that you will see is due to the ownership by the Schwarzenberg family, it was bought by Jan Adolf I of Schwarzenberg, a European diplomat. His grandson Prince Adam Frantisek, had the chateau rebuilt in Baroque style. In the 19th century Prince Jan Adolf II and his wife ordered another reconstruction in the neo Gothic Romantic style, the final restoration completed in 1871.
In 1939, Prince Adolf Schwarzenberg, the final Schwarzenberg owner, left for Italy to escape the Nazis and then moved to the United States. The chateau became the property of Czechoslovkia when he did not return.
