I've never been a fan of Fishermans Wharf, but sometimes it's nice to grab a beer and a bite to eat near the water. There are surprisingly few of these places in Monterey that are not on touristy Fishermans Wharf or Cannery Row, and even fewer with outdoor seats overlooking the water. The Seafood Cafe is one of these rare spots in Monterey.

We stopped in just for a beer, but the fried food smelled good, so we did check out a menu. They have a variety of mostly fried seafood appetizers and entrees, but very few items under $10. Our service was slow; after we told the waiter we were finished with everything, he came back twenty minutes later asking if we wanted our bill. While there I saw a few people eating, but service was slow all around; I even saw a few guests sit for 10 minutes or more then leave after not being waited on. Even worse, the staff was cleaning up up kicking boxes towards the garbage bins past the customers rather than making two trips. They had at least 3 or 4 waiters serving only about 8 or 10 tables, so there was no need for the long waits or the poor service.

In a nutshell: Nice place to grab a beer, but be prepared to wait.
