Belvedere is a handsome Renaissance palace belonging to the castle complex but situated outside the walls. It was built by Ferdinand I for his wife, Anna in the 16th century (1538-64), unfortunately she never lived to see its completion as she died giving birth to her 15th child... The building is surrounded by beautiful gardens which went through different transformations over the ages. One of the interesting features of the garden is the so called 'singing fountain' situated right in front of Belvedere. The name comes from the bagpiper at the top of the fountain and supposedly you can hear different tunes putting an ear to the fountain. The gardens of Belvedere are separated from the castle by deep trenched which in Rudolf's times were turned into game park. There were wooden bridges leading from the main castle from which you could watch deer running freely in the trenches.
