Since Karlsruhe is a relatively young city, we know the exact date of its 'birth': On June 17, 1715 Margrave Karl Wilhelm laid the first stone to his new palace and founded his new residential city.
Every second year in June the city's birthday is celebrated with a street party and some events. The one in 2002 gained eternal glory when a giant Ferris wheel was put up behind the palace. Postcards with this picture are still around. (Nobody talks about how long it took to recover the park afterwards.)
The 2008 event wasn't that spectacular, to be honest. The so-called Festplatz at the congress center saw a stage and some food and drink stalls, the KVV took the chance to advertise their concept for the underground tram (without mentioning the problems the project causes, of course), some musical events took place, the zoo participated with some more events - and that was about it. Temperatures reached 35°C that weekend, so the conditions weren't favourable, though.
The 300 year anniversary in 2015 is going to be much more remarkable. Let's see what they will be planning.
