"On the recommendation of local..." Nepal Off The Beaten Path Tip by bdschobel

Nepal Off The Beaten Path: 108 reviews and 159 photos

On the recommendation of local friends, I spent one night in Nagarkot, a very small village about 30 km. northeast of Kathmandu, with great views of the Himalaya. In the morning, I took a tourist bus (for $1.35) to an observation tower to see the sun rise over Everest (Sagarmatha to the Nepalese). Unfortunately, I saw only fog!

On the way to and from Nagarkot, you must pass through Bhaktapur, another really interesting place. This small city has lots of Tibetan temples and is famous for local handicrafts, especially metalwork. An easy stop and well worth it. The central part of the city has a nominal admission charge for foreigners (but you get a map with that!).
