"Crystal Palace" London Off The Beaten Path Tip by clouds111

London Off The Beaten Path: 1,702 reviews and 3,054 photos

Crystal Palace Park takes you back into the Victorian era and if you are staying around that area it's worth a stroll through there and a visit to the museum.

The park got it's name by the huge building which was transported here from Hyde Park in 1853 which was home of the Great Exhibition. The building was set in some ornamental gardens, some of which can still be seen today, including the old sphinxs and steps that would have led down from the building. In 1950 this beautiful place burnt to the ground, the flames of which were seen for miles around - my nan remembers seeing this from her flat.

Despite the destruction and deterioration of this site I still enjoy visiting here, especially the Dinosaur area around the lake which is a part of the orginal design.

Take overground train from London Victoria or London Bridge to Crystal Palace station.
