Granada has a fantastic flamenco scene. Flamenco comes in two major venues. A Tablao is a tourist show. Don?t let this dissuade you. The talent at tablaos is outstanding. A Peña is a local bar. More authentic, but hit or miss for the talent performing on any particular night.

I do not know which Penas Garcia Lorca frequented, but my guess is one of the cave clubs in Sacromente, most likely the cave of Maria Garcia. Today it is called La Cueva de Maria la Canastera. Sadly I would suggest avoiding the Cave Clubs. These have entirely lost their authenticity and are today truly tourist traps and the talent is pathetic. Here is a video of La Cueva de Maria la Canastera. It's horribly lame flamenco performed for naive tourists who do not know any better.

My best experience of authentic flamenco in Spain, without tourists, was at a private gypsy club in Granada called La Plateria on Placeta de Toqueros, 7. Saturday night is the best show, but Saturday night is 'members only' night. I've been allowed in on a Saturday night so it is worth a try. If you are a small group and you are very polite to the doorman he will probably let you in.

You will love Granada. Fred
