According to legend, Lord Shiva was so captivated by the beauty of Parvati that he expressed himself by dance. Thus one of Shiva's <font color=orange><b>AVATARS</font></b> or incarnations is <font color=red><b>NATRAJ</font></b>, the lord of the dance. Indian classical dance generally begins with a tribute to Natraj. With the advent of the moghuls into northern India, Kathak was transformed from a temple dance to a courtly dance.
