Lighthouse Avenue in New Monterey above Cannery Row has numerous businesses owned by old hippies, particularly used book and record stores. We like to check these places out every so often for bargains on old books, art to hang on the walls, or to just collect a few pieces of memorabilia from the past.

Vinyl Revolution (230 Lighthouse Ave, Monterey, CA - 831-646-9020) is a small place in an old-run down building, but they have a great variety of old vinyl records at prices from under $1 to about $10 for most items. The place is run by a knowledgeable friendly old hippie with a long gray beard. During our last visit we bought records by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Merle Haggard, and The Eagle for under $2 each.

Lighthouse Books (801 Lighthouse Ave, Monterey, CA - 831-372-0653) is pretty small but they pack a lot of books in their 10 foot tall shelves. My last visit I had to convince my girlfriend to put a few books back, and she still bought about five old books for around $65. My favorite is called Confessions of an English Opium Eater.
