"The best place to feel spring comming is Morris A" Morris Arboretum & Gardens Tip by eugini2001
Morris Arboretum & Gardens, Philadelphia: 2 reviews and 10 photos
Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania is quite a big area for walking (92 acre), full of gardens and parks with fountains, that is located between suburban and the city center.
The Arboretum used to be a summer house of John and Lydia Morris, brother and sister who never married. They traveled all over the World, bringing back home plants and landscape design ideas. While the family mansion no longer survives, the carriage house and stable were adopted as the Visitor Center. You still can say that this costruction had definitely never been a house.
We visited the Arboretum at the beginning of May,so the collection highlights we mostly enjoyed were magnolias, cherries, crabapples, azaleas, dogwood, tulips, bleeding hearts. It was a relaxing trip to nature. Before entering the rose garden we met a lady sitting at the desk with microscope,so my daughter had a chance to look at the some seeds really closely. It was time for roses yet,but time we saw some beautiful tulips and the rock wall covered with flowers.I think the most impressive at this time of the year after azaleas colection was the view of the rock wall. The Fernery is very neat too, small, but cozy.We found a grey lovely cat, with the tag that said "Harry" on it,gracefully wandering or just hanging around the Fernery and even managed to pat him, despite his huge clause. They also have a log cabin just to sit on the porch and look around on "fern-scape" around it. Swan pond had only one swan there, but it was not a skinny New York style swan, this one was rather huge and fat-luxury style bird. Also we spied on the goose with her offspring exploring the pond area, that was quite a surprise to see them, so funny wobbling around. We have a lot of Canadian Geese in the area, but I never seem such little ones feeling so safely around people.
We saw garden railroad being get ready for Memorial Day opening ,it loked interesting especially for mini road lovers and children. The bottom line is :If you need a nature touch, but have only half of a day- Arboretum is right 4 you!
