Oaxaca's known as the green city - not because of the trees and parks but because so many of its grand public buildings, churches and pavements are constructed of a green volcanic stone known locally as "cantera". We didn't really notice it the first time we were there, in late March and the end of the dry season when the stone was dry and dusty. It had rained qute a lot just before our most recent visit and the water had brought the colour of the stone out so that we could really see all the shades of green in the stone.

The supply of stone is all but exhausted, the disused quarry has been turned into a park - and this is causing a problem as it's now difficult to acquire for repairs to blend in with the old work. Added to this, the city has a huge problem with graffiti which, as the cantera is very porous, is almost impossible to remove. The current solution is to use green paint, but it doesn't really work as the paint is flat and dead whereas the stone has beautiful soft variations.
