Driving in Iceland for us was as easy as driving in our own turf, so to speak, but that was because we were lucky that it was sunny all day and had no weird or quick weather change and because Sweden has more or less the same weather during all 4 seasons of the year. We also were only driving around Reykjanes peninsula but if you're planning on driving other parts of Iceland then it pays off to check the road conditions and the weather forecast so that you can prepare with whatever's necessary for your trip.

Be aware that there are roads that only open during the Summer and that if you rent a compact or sedan car and you drive to the Highlands and some F-numbered routes, your car insurance will become void, plus you'll be liable to whatever damage the car sustained.

Another thing that we should know is that not all roads are paved. There are some hard packed gravel roads that have loose gravel on top (like route 42) so be careful not to drive too fast. Iceland also has "blind rises", which basically are rises on a road where you can't see what's up afterwards.

Close to Keflavik airport there's a crashed car with a sign saying "drive carefully in Iceland". I couldn't get a good picture of the car, but I hope you get the message with what I uploaded. The pictures were taken on my way to the airport, which is why there is some window reflection.
