This old-new gate is one of the main sights of the Buda Castle, but for a hungarian just to mention it recalls childhood memories. In fact, the hungarian mothers, when their babies, sons, daughters cry or just are in a tantrum say them often: your mouth is as big as the Vienna Gate.
This is a medieval gate wich was damaged in 1686 at the reconquest of the Castle from the turks was completely destroyed in 1896 for the millenary celebrations. Morover they (stupidly) wanted to demolish also the castle walls, wich fortunately has never occured. It was rebuilt only in 1936 (without doors) for the 250th anniversary of the reconquest of Buda. You can climb the stairs above the gate and you can see the nice views of the Rose hill and (in the opposite direction) of the Evangelical church.

Address: District I
Directions: On the top of Castle Hill (Varhegy). Funicular from Clark Adam ter (Buda bridgehead of the Chain Bridge), bus #16 from Deak F. ter, bus VAR from Moszkva ter. No cars allowed.
