"Munot" Schaffhausen Things to Do Tip by pure1942

It's a shame that a lot of visitors don't spend more time in Schaffhausen and instead head straight for the Rheinfalls. They will miss out on so much, not least of all this wonderful and unusual fortress which sits on a hill overlooking the town and river.
The Munot was built during the 17th century after the Reformation using forced labour and its' circular shape is very unusual. Inside you can take the spiralling ramp up to the courtyard on top of the fortress where you can enjoy great views over the town of Schaffhausen and the River Rhine. The hill on which the Munot is built is also a vineyard and the vine hill with fortress sitting on top is a lovely sight when approaching the Munot.
Below the courtyard is a dim inner courtyard lit by shafts of light entering through skylights in the ceiling.
Directions: from the town centre walk along Vordergasse and on into Unterstadt. Turn left onto Munotsteig and up the the steep steps to the fortress.
