Maurice Bishop became head of the Marxist New Jewel Movement political party in 1973. He was elected to parliament, and was for several years the leader of the opposition in the Grenadian House of Representatives. He opposed the government of Prime Minister Eric Gairy and his United Labour Party. 1979 Bishop and his political cronies decided that they knew what was best for the people of Grenada and overthrew the democratically elected Gairy while he was out of the country addressing the United Nations in New York.

Bishop declared himself Prime Minister of Grenada, suspended the constitution and. Banned all political parties except for the New Jewel Movement and jailed anyone having the bravery to protest. Bishop then turned to Cuba for their expertise in subjugating the will of the people and for military aide to enforce their rule. The People's Revolutionary Army (PRA) was also formed during Bishop's rule. The PRA was used to commit human rights abuses, such as torture and detention of political prisoners without trial.

In 1983 he split with Deputy Prime Minister Bernard Coard. Bishop was deposed and placed under house arrest in October. Large public demonstrations demanding the restoration of Bishop occurred and Bishop was briefly freed from by the crowd. He was recaptured by the PRA and he and 7 others were brought to the pictured courtyard inside Fort George and shot.

This finally convinced President Ronald Reagan and other Caribbean countries to invade and restore democracy.
