Jan Kilinski was a leader of the Warsaw burghers in the Koscuszko Insurrection in 1784. He was wounded twice and captured the Russian ambassador's residence. For this he was imprisoned at St Petersburgh. He is revered because he embodies the traditional Polish virtues of bravery and patriotism. The statue was erected in 1936 in Pl Krasinskich, but in reprisal for ban attack on the monument to Copernicus, the Nazis hid the statue of Kilinski in the vaults of the National Museum. However, the scouts painted graffiti on the walls 'People of Warsaw! I am here, Jan Ki.linski'. . In 1959 his statue was returned .
