  Expensive frescos
by John195123

Supposedly this area is famous for its frescos. The one place we went to see them charged 30 yuan to get in, but there is another fee that they charged which is like a "cultural area fee"... you can pay it anywhere and it supposedly supports the locals, though they honestly get enough money from selling souvenirs or renting land to Chinese souvenir vendors/businesses that they probably don't need it. However, no other place we went to demanded this 80 yuan, so we decided not to go in... they wouldn't let us in unless we had that piece of paper. Anyway, be prepared, especially if you go to the monastery near Baisha, for them to ask for the paper or the 80 yuan (May 2008) that it costs.
