Karlsruhe's main train station is a Jugendstil/art nouveau building (though rebuilt after World War II) that deserves a second look. The station was built in 1909-1913 by the architect August Stürzenacker.

Long distance as well as local trains and S-Bahn arrive here. International buses (Eurolines etc.) arrive and depart in the square South of the station, thus its back side.

Exits: If you arrive in Karlsruhe and get off your train, you'll find that the platform has two exits and staircases. Avoid the exit City-Ost which takes you to an ugly empty tunnel - use the exit City-Süd, only there you'll get into the main hall and out into the square where the trams and buses depart.

Lockers can be found in the far left corner of the main hall between the book store and McD.

Public toilets are a) in the tunnel between platform 1 and the main hall (clean but expensive) and b) outside the Southern/back exit on the right (free but dirty). The choice is yours...

Tickets for local public transport can be obtained either from the ticket machines at the tram station or from the KVV office inside the small glass cube outside the station's main entrance, at the latter you'll also get detailed timetable information.

Gastronomy inside the station isn't too convincing. The two bakeries are all right for grabbing a roll or sandwich and a coffee to go. If you have spare time and want an ok coffee and a place to sit down, there is a much nicer cafe right across the square (Bahnhofsplatz) opposite the main entrance on the back side of the tourist information building.
