"The Ha'penny Bridge" Ha'penny Bridge Tip by lbhspatriot

Ha'penny Bridge, Dublin: 58 reviews and 92 photos

How can a bridge be a tourist attraction you might ask. Well, seriously I don't know. But if a bridge deserves to be one, this here surely does! It is one of the best know bridges of Dublin, a pedestrian bridge that everyone walked over at least once.

I will give you a brief history lesson before I go on:
This pedestrian bridge orignates from 1816, it is commonly know as the Ha'penny Bridge because of a toll that had to be issued prior to crossing the Liffey. It had several names in the past, first of which was the Wellington Bridge, but it has been called after the half penny toll for centuries and even now when the toll itself was dropped in 1919 no one in Dublin seems to remember that its real name is the Liffey Bridge.

So why is this bridge so popular? Perhaps because it is opposite the entrance to Temple bar and provides easy access to all local pubs on both sides of the Liffey. Or maybe because it is of a nice design and a pleasure to walk through, especially for those of a romantinc nature. Decide for yourselves.
