Also called "The Drawing Room of Europe".
This is the only urban place called a piazza in Venice, the others, doesn't matter the size, are called campi.

Piazza San Marco is extremely popular between tourists, photographers and pigeons.
Originated in the 9th century as a small area located in front of the St Mark's Basilica, it has been enlarged till his present size in 1177.

Piazza San Marco has always been seen as the center of the city, location of all the important offices of the city state.
