Gdansk is, next to Cracow, one of the most beautiful cities in Poland, though much different. In the old town´s architecture you can see a lot of influence from Flemish, German, Scandinavian and even Italian tradition - a heritage from the centuries, when Gdansk was one of the cities of the Hansa, cooperating in international trade across the Baltic see. The old town is relatively small, you can stroll around and enjoy the unique atmosphere, take a walk along the promenade of the river Motlawa or walk to the famous Stockyard (no longer named after Lenin), the cradle of 'Solidarity', the trade union that changed history in Poland and beyond
