"Options for travelling around NZ in a month" New Zealand Favorite Tip by amandajayne81

Favorite thing: The campervan or car/cheap motels are both going to cost you about the same. However people I know who have done the campervan thing have also had the vans broken into (apparently they are big targets for theft of souveniers). I don't really think the NZ bus/train network is adequate for a trip the size you are after. Maybe consider buying a very cheap car??? Probably not worth it for just one month. Surf the web I know here in Australia we have several backpacker combi van groups that you can hire from. I think 'Wicked Campers' is one.

Mum and Dad saw the top half of the North Island in 10 days so you could do most of the main sights in that time but maybe you would be better to do one island quickly (just to get a taste) and then spend maybe 3 weeks in the other to get a bit more into it.

A few tips from my trip and other friends who have been in the last year
-The West coast of the South Island is remote but stunning
-Queenstown is very expensive as is Rotorua.
-I loved the Northland above Auckland. Lots of free things to do like look at beaches and big trees (Kauri forests.)
-Waitangi has heaps of history.

(This was the answer to a forum question about the best way to see NZ in a month on a strict budget.

Fondest memory: The sheep - they are so clean and white and so many on the beautiful green hills. This is coming from a girl who grew up on a sheep property in Australia were our sheep are an orange colour from the dust and scattered over massive paddocks in an effort to find food. Well this is at least true in Queensland.
