"Hire a campervan and use campsites" State of Tasmania Transportation Tip by TheAndos

We hired a small motorhome for 19 days. There are many companies to choose from but we used Hertz in Hobart. There was a double bed over the drivers' cabin and was great for two people, and you only have to unpack once. There was a shower and chemical toilet but we used camp sites or public conveniences. The van was equipped with gas cooking facilities but if we used a powered site we could use the electric fry pan, kettle, microwave, heater. The TV had "rabbits' ears" antennae which was pretty useless 60% of the time but there was a radio and CD player too.
Having the van meant we didn't need to look for accommodation each night nor did we need to eat out. It was easy to pull over and have a cup of coffee or lunch.
Places where we didn't use a campsite:
New Norfolk - try the river front just up from the official campsite or at the sports ground on the way in from Hobart.
Strahan campsite was full - so book ahead. We actually parked in the car park on the waterfront because the ticket machines weren't working.
We used the campsite in Deloraine but if you drive through it, there is some free camping at the far end by the main bridge through the town.
St Helens: the locals will try and get you to go to Humbug Point and Dora Point but it is a long way down an unpaved road (which you can't do with a hired van). Instead, when you get to Binalong Bay, turn north and there are several free camping areas with bush toilets right on the beach.
We would strongly advise booking these campsites:
Strahan, Coles Bay, Lake St Clair and Cradle Mountain.
