Cahors (pop. 21K) is a busy departmental administrative town with an old history and very old buildings to show for it. The cathedral was built to participate as a haven for pilgrims on their way from Conques to Moissac. The church has a very early Christ in Ascension on the tympanum of its North Door. A magnificent fortified bridge (begun in 1308) still is its prized entry point.
