"Possibly the best Inn ever" Golden Well (U Zlate Studne) Prague Tip by dougkin
Golden Well (U Zlate Studne) Prague, Prague: 1,663 reviews and 1 photos
U Zlaté Studně (At the Golden Well) is the ideal inn: supremely beautiful, ideally located, comfortable, peaceful, and served by outstanding people. In our travels through the Czech Republic it was a most gracious home away from home.
It's hard to know where to start--but here's an example: from our room's window, you look down onto the Inn's comfortable lower terrace, which itself looks over 2 Malá Strana palaces and their gardens. From that terrace, you can look up at Prague Castle, which is just up a few flights of stairs into the rose gardens. (Emperor Rudolf II bought this house for legendary astronomer Tycho Brahe around 1600, wanting him close to the castle for visits.) The Inn's rooftop restaurant has a surreally beautiful view over Malá Strana and the entire city, including Old and New Towns almost to Vysehrad--and also featured the best dinner we ate in Prague. For a 16th-century building, there are surprising amenities tucked away: there is a small elevator to the terrace, and our room featured a hot tub. The hotel offers service, travel and accomodations packages and can arrange practically anything--they found wheelchair and walker assistance for my wife, which in old European cities is no small feat.
What else? There's a daily chess puzzle set up on a board in the lobby. The letter left in your room by manager Robert Safarik is a tour de force of welcome. Tomá? Jančík, Anastasiya Karova and Ayman Hamid are supremely skilled front-desk managers, concierges, and all-around good people. Service won't be better anywhere in Prague (and the friendliness is a little unusual as you may know if you've travelled in the CZR). Actually, service won't be this good most places in the world.
Downsides: it's not cheap. Some travellers will miss some amenities--no pool, business center--but if your ideal is a quiet, romantic glass of wine overlooking what may be Europe's most beautiful city, this is it.
Unique Qualities: Here's the checklist:
--Beautiful building is historic (Tycho Brahe) and old (1500s)
--Courteous, friendly, knowledgeable, professional service
--An actual excellent restaurant in Prague
--Upstairs is a gigantic castle
--Cobbled lane and courtyard leading to the inn
--Close to very Czech pub U Hrocha (At the Hippo)
--Whirlpool baths in 16th-century surroundings
--Moravian wine package, a bottle a night. Is good and what the heck.
