Favorite thing: ?Servoas? (Saint Servaas church). Building of this church started in around 1000. The oldest parts are the nave, transcept, crypte and choir. The absis and the two towers were build in the 12 th century. This, with strong arches, just like the roman west-work. The ?berg portaal??potral, is early gothic. The chappels and the gothic hallway date from 1475. Impresive is when you fist walk a bit around the church. There you see the Bergportaal, with its ornaments above it, walk up the stairs and turn to the right, here you see the 2 big towers in roman style. You pass by a convent on the feft hand and you enter the Keizer Karel square, where you enter the churchh at the northern portal. Also impressive. At the right side you first have the Sint Servaas chappel. And for the rest the closter (kruisgang) surround a pandhof (garden). At the eastside of the corridor the Grameer, the famous big clock, is located. Follow the corner around at the eastern cloister and you enter the treusure room. Here you find not only the well known ?noodkist? but also all sorts of important textile, church historical artefacts. Renovation of the textles have been done recently by a swiss company. Then, at the door entering the church, nearby the tresureroom you see a relif. Also from the other closister you can enter the church. Under the choir is the crypte. In the eastern crypte you find the place where Servaas got burried in 384. The grave gets visited by thousants of pilgrims each year. Hanneman, the priest, offers sometimes lodging to pilgrims, at the Sint Martinushof at the basilica. In the back of the church where the room for ths orchestra is, the is the statue of Charles the Great. And at the left side, a bit further you find the saet of Wisdom. The choir itsself is a unique and wonderful piece of roman church architecture. The painings at the celing of the choir are heavenly. The apsis depicts Jezus as judge of the world. The ceiling from the choir to the orchestra are done in bright blue/white colours, a bit simple, but very joyable. In 1985 the pope visited the church by which it got declared as a basilica. Further, the ?keyzerzaal? is beautifull to see. The treasure room during the tourist season (april-oct.)is open from 10.00-18.00 --except for august july (then open from 10.00-18.00).
