Favorite thing: At other tips you may find already something written by me about this church. I ve writen some tales about the place and give a short resumee of the usual facts. Here I want to invite you for a little guided tour into the church. Allthough the Sint Servaas dominates the twon as it comes to church architecture, a visit without the Slevrouw (Onze Lieve vrouwe/ Our Holy Lady/OLV) is not having seen Maastricht completely. With digging in the ground, under the church there have been found rememnants of a former building, dating from around 600. This has to be an early Merovinger Bishops church. The capital was founded around 1000 by bishop Notger from Liege. Around this time the building activities have started for the building which is standing here now. The OLV is build in roman style, clearly. It has the usual shape of a basilica, however, the name ?basilica? has nothing to do with the religious meaning of this word, which refers to a title that the pope gives to a church. The Slevrouw got its title of ?basilica?in 1933. The basilica gets a symbol for that title (an ?umbrella? at the altar). The OLV has since 1206 a golden cross with splinters of the Holy cross, coming from Constantinopel (Istanbul). Many pilgims got attracked to this relic. The Sint Servaas church got very jalous about this and tried to forbid the OLV to show relics anymore. This rivalry between the two churches is ages old therefor (nowadays just by a way of ?traditional joke? since both churches co=operate well). As in 720 Hubertus places its seat as Bishop to Lige his church in Maastricht was the Onze Lieve Vrouwe, which was already then a real big church, whereas the Sint Servaas was small chappel.
