Favorite thing: Already mentioned as historical figure of Maastrict, a little extra details about the life of this important son of the city. Behind the St Lambertuschurch we find a street named after this man and a penning is named after him. He was born in the Brusselsestraat 77 in 1843. Originating from Belgium, his father made carreer in Netherlands?India. At early age he already liked art since he liked drawing. But he decided to study law in Leyden. He became lawyer at the supreme court in The Hague. Around 1875 he chages his job advocate for becoming refendary at the Inner Departpment divison Arts & Science. Personally I d say ?chapeau? since I myself have made a combination of law and Art&Science (CWS) and see not many people making this change. Art and monuments definitley got the interests of the ex-advocate. He founded the commission of monuments maintainance in 1873. In 1868, on the age of 25, he personally gets engaged in the struggle to keep the local government from ruining the twon walls and fortifiations. Unfortunaly he didn?t manage to stop the breaking of the picticareque powder tower, but he got all the fortifications documented and regulated the foundings (roman rests). In 1896 the major wanted to ruin the Servaasbridge and replace it by a steel construction (can you imagine that!?) Thanls to his Haagse connection Stuer manages to stop this plan. In 1881 de Stuer took the initative for the restauration of the Helpoort. And he paid from personal financial means the rebuilding of the Jeker Tower. He also was taking part in the building of the Poort Wearachig, -- the breaktrough for the Villa Park ? amd the rebuilding of the Wycker waterpoort. In 1913 De Stuers buys the Spaans Gouvernment inorder to proect it from getting broken down. One can rightly say that Victor de Stuer contributed a lot to the name Maastricht now has as second most important monuments town in the country.
