  19 th century workers (pottemenkes)

Favorite thing: The mids of the ninetheenth century was so important in Maastrict developping. The city litterely brusted out of its walls. Because of the separtion from Belgium and the efforts of the entrepreneurs such as Regout the city developed into an industry city. Wealth and prosperity were possible for the upperclass, and the dutch government created good conditions for this, so that the upperclass (who had voting right) didn?t support separist ideas (t.i. going together with Belgium). Condition however was the possibility to build new industry buildings, and that was a problem, because Maastricht had the walls and fortifations. These hinderd the buidling and expanding of new industry. Since in 1874 the vestingswet (fortifiation law) deliberated Maastricht from its function as fortifiation town, the walls could be broken. Industry in the westbank was located in the north, the Sphinx, and got connected with newly created transpotration ways, such as a railroad to Hasselt (Belgium) and canals such as the Zuid Willemvaart. The canal came out at the bassin and river Maas. On the other side of the Maas, industry got build in the south, where now ?ceramique? is located. (societe ceramique factory). As already mentioned new industry attracked many workers from all over the region. Under liberal Thorbecke social housing for workers was a question for the industry owners.Notoroious therefor became Regout?s Cite Ouvriere a ?store house for people.? Better were the laour houses in the Statensingel. What a contrast behind the Statesingel, on the other side. A plan with avenues, parks, big round traffic squre, fountains was realized there. Brussels but maybe more Paris was the inspiration for theis new part of the city. Big broad avenues build after the Paris Hausman boulevards.
