"Dakota Apts/ John Lennon Memorial" Dakota Building Tip by TexasDave

Dakota Building, New York City: 12 reviews and 17 photos

The elaborate building was built 1881-84 and is mostly known now as the place where John and Ono Lennon lived and where he was shot and killed in 1980. The exterior was used to film Rosemary's Baby It has been home to quite a few other famous people: Boris Karloff, Leonard Bernstein, Lauren Bacall, Judy Garland, Roberta Flack, and many others.

In 1985 a memorial to John Lennon was built in Central Park- an in-ground mosaic donated by the city of Naples with the word 'Imagine' in the center. Devotees of Lennon maintain a flower arrangement of roses in a Peace sign around the mosaic. Nearby is Strawberry Fields, a garden area arranged for by funds donated by Ono a year after John's death.
