"Homage to foreign divers" Top 5 Page for this destination Broome Things to Do Tip by albaaust

Broome Things to Do: 77 reviews and 176 photos

The Japanese Cemetery is an interesting historical site to visit. It’s a unique site in that it was established at the very beginning of the establishment of Broome as a townsite and one of the few cemeteries for a specific group of "foreigners" in Australia.

The cemetery was in a state of disrepair until it was "rehabilitated" by a Japanese
businessman in 1988

It is now laid out as a traditional Japanese garden with the headstones carved out of sandstone or granite.

There is an explanation of the cemetry at the gateway but no other explanations which is a pity. I would suggest that if you wanted to explore the history of Japanese divers in more detail you visit the historical museum.

The Chinese cemetery is next door.
