franz theunisz, the face of Maastricht dialect
by ger4444

Of whom are the Maastricht proud in these days? Maastricht has some persons who got national or international fame. In case you are interested in the contemporary Maastricht society with its role playing persons, we can name the following maastricht locals (either born in town or living there now). André Rieu (international famous for his Straus orchestra. He makes classic music popular with the crowds). Boudewijn Zenden (international soccerplayer. A son of Pierre Zenden who has a sportschool at the Bernardusstraat) Sjeng Kraft (died some time ago. He is known by all Maastricht people. He was a composer, accordian player and a central figure in Carnival. Many carnival songs are from his hands. He haas a musical family, his daughter Beppy Kraft is now a famous carnival singer who records also other dialect songs. I was always happy to get to hear the carnival music before the season started cuz I used to live across the street of the Krafts) Benny Neyman (recently died of cancer, a singer who is popular in Belgium and in the Netherlands, charted in the eighties with hits such as ?waarom fluister ik je naam nog? and ?een vrijgezel?) and then Franz Theunisz (progam moderator and singer/composer. Had a national hitsingle in the ninethees ?sjeng oan the geng? (go sjeng) with Jeng playing accordion on it. Its dialect for the one who likes it. This is as far for culture. There are also some Maastrich locals in the national spotlight as it comes to politics. Maria Van Der Hoeve (minister in two cabinets) Maxime Verhaagh (chef of the christain democrats) and our Major Leers (who got a lot of national attention for his coffeeshop policy) An interesting person last but not least is Moscowitz (He and his son being top advocates, mostly dealing with getting white baord criminals out of prison).
