"France, Caen" Europe Things to Do Tip by darkjedi
Europe Things to Do: 1,295 reviews and 2,159 photos
As you browse among the bookstands of the old town or contemplate the soaring arches of the medieval abbeys, it is easy to forget that much of Caen was flattened during the Second World War. The focal point is the castle, begun around 1060 by William the Conqueror, much altered down the ages and even now undergoing an ambitious programme of restoration; entrance free. Within its walls, the Beaux Arts Museum has one of the best collections in provincial France (free admission for permanent collection, £2-£3 for exhibitions). Once there, the modern tram network provides a clean means of getting around. The city has extensive cycle paths, 1,200 acres of public open spaces.
