Taksim Square, Istanbul: 35 reviews and 74 photos

If you are happen to be in Istiklal Caddesi in Istanbul Turkey go and see the Independence Monument. It is located in the southern end of Taksim Square in Beyoglu district. It commemorates the Turkish hero Kemal Ataturk who was the founder of the Turkish Republic in 1923.

Public monument like this was not allowed during the Ottoman Empire who governed Turkey under the Shari’a (Islamic law). When Kemal Ataturk took over, he made Turkey a secular republic.

The monument was the work of Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica and was unveiled in 1928 five years after Turkey became a republic.
