If you have the means, a silk liner is the way to go, otherwise a cotton or polycotton (stronger) liner is next best. These will add a fraction more warmth but the real advantage is to keep the sleeping bag cleaner for longer on extended trips and to use on its own when the climate is hot. I used a fleece liner when trekking at altitude which is much warmer but very bulky.
